Ocean Beats | A Beat Maker Project

*Beat Maker- A person who makes or produces instrumental music performed by instruments with no vocals.
Nature’s music is all around us. The William A. Watkins Collection of Marine Mammal Sound Recordings preserves recordings of various marine mammal species, collected over a span of seven decades. Participate in the Ocean Beat project by listening to the sounds below, made by whales and other marine animals. Then use them as inspiration to mix a whole new sound.

  2. Download your chosen sound and upload it to your preferred beat creation platform
  3. Mix and create
  4. Submit your new mixed beat to oceanbeats@education.whalingmuseum.org
  5. Check back to the project to listen to music created by students just like you!

Haley's Ocean Beat
"My inspiration from the Watkins Collection was the Humpback Whale. I chose this sound because Whales are my favorite ocean animal and I knew once I heard the sound, I could make something sound like it was from a cinematic film. With adding a bit of music behind it etc, it was so much fun and I really enjoyed it!"

Steve's Ocean Beat
"Here is a beat using your whale song files, no additional audio was added. I really enjoy your social media and love the Museum although I don't get there as often as I'd like it's always a great visit!
